About Shot Tower Historical State Park

Shot Tower Historical State Park is located in Ansted, West Virginia, within the Appalachian region known for its rugged terrain and rich history. The park's centerpiece is the 160-foot tall Guppy’s Castle, a sandstone structure built in 1860 that was used to manufacture lead shot by dropping molten lead from the top, allowing it to sphericalize during the fall into a water basin below. It is the tallest shot tower east of the Mississippi River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park spans over a small tract of land along Hawk's Nest Creek, adjacent to the New River Gorge, providing visitors with both cultural and natural experiences. The surrounding environment features hardwood forests common to the central Appalachian Mountains, supporting species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a variety of songbirds. Visitors can explore the tower, learn about 19th-century manufacturing processes, and enjoy picnicking in the shaded park grounds. The park also offers access to nearby New River Gorge National Park for hiking, boating, and rock climbing. Interpretive signs along the walking paths explain the historical significance of the tower and the operation of the shot-making industry in West Virginia. The park appeals to history buffs, educators, families, and those interested in industrial heritage as well as outdoor enthusiasts looking for a scenic and educational stop.
